Be myself

You need a deed poll or statutory declaration before you can update this document. You usually need to update your home country passport first, as UKVI generally needs that as evidence before your eVisa can be changed.

About this planner

What is this?

A free, private tool that helps trans and non-binary people in the UK work out the steps they need to take to update their name and gender marker on their documents.

Be myself helps you work out what needs updating so you spend less time navigating confusing paperwork and more time simply being yourself.

Who is it for?

Anyone in the UK aged 16 or over who wants to update their legal documents to match their gender identity. This includes people who only want a name change, only a gender marker change, or both. There is also guidance for people from outside the UK who hold a visa or eVisa. People under 16 need parental consent and follow a different process, which this planner does not cover.

Is my information safe?

Yes. Nothing you enter is ever sent to a server or stored outside your own device. Your progress is saved in your browser so you can return to it later. Press the red ⚠️ button or the Esc key at any time to instantly leave the page. For full details, see Privacy.

Can I use this offline?

Yes. This is a single web page with no external files, so you can save it to your device (usually Ctrl+S or File > Save page as) and open it later without an internet connection. If you already have an action plan, use the 🔗 Copy link button to preserve it for use offline. When you open your offline copy of the website, you will need to edit the URL (everything from "?p=" onwards).

How does it work?

You answer a short set of questions about your situation: what documents you already have, what you have already updated, and what you want to do. The planner builds a step-by-step action plan with links to the relevant official pages.

Step-by-step or checklist?

Both produce the same plan. The step-by-step wizard shows one question at a time, which works well if you are not sure where to start. The checklist shows everything at once, which is better if you already know your situation. You can switch between them at any time.

Is this legal advice?

No. This planner gives general guidance only. It does not replace advice from a qualified professional. Always check important steps on official government pages before submitting any applications.

How do I save or share my plan?

Your plan is saved in your browser and will still be here the next time you visit on the same device. To access it from another device, or share it with someone, use the 🔗 Copy link button on the toolbar. This copies a link that contains your full plan. You can also use 🖨️ Print to save a PDF. There is no account or login needed.

Some guidance is marked with i. This marks information that comes from the shared experiences of the transgender and non-binary communities rather than from an official source. Hover over the symbol, or focus it with the keyboard, to read this reminder. What happens in your case may differ. Time estimates carry the same marker.
